Diet plays a crucial role in dental health. Many foods we consume every day can erode enamel, promote cavities or stain teeth without us realizing it.
Citrus fruits and acidic juices (oranges, lemons, grapefruit) are rich in vitamin C, but citric acid erodes tooth enamel. The recommendation: eat them with meals, not as snacks, and rinse your mouth with water afterwards.
Carbonated drinks, including 'zero sugar', contain phosphoric acid and citric acid which attack enamel. Even sparkling mineral water has a lower pH than still water.
White bread and crackers quickly turn to simple sugar in the mouth, feeding cariogenic bacteria. Starches stick to teeth and stay in cracks longer than chocolate.
The ice that many habitually chew on can cause microcracks in the enamel and damage existing dental work. Coffee and tea, although they have beneficial antioxidants, can stain enamel over time.
Dried fruits, although nutritious, are sticky and high in concentrated sugar. They stick between the teeth and feed the bacteria for long periods. Prefer fresh fruit instead.
Doctor's tip: Don't brush your teeth right after eating acidic foods — wait 30 minutes.
